Secondhand clothing markets, an overview in Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania
The survey consulted a total of 1,966 traders, of which 1,056 in Tanzania (Ilala and Karume markets) and 910 in Uganda (Owino market), covering an overall sample of 244,500 pieces of clothing. The findings help to provide a data-based, firsthand understanding of important SHC markets in these countries, with the objective of informing policy decisions that are sensitized to local conditions, while at the same time aligned with global sustainability goals
Digitizing waste management: How data is transforming rural Cambodia
Approximately 80% of Cambodia’s population lives in rural areas with little to no access to formal solid waste management services. Existing waste disposal options are limited to a few formal landfills and predominantly open dumpsites, which suffer from irregular maintenance and accessibility issues. As a result, waste that does not reach these sites is often burned, buried, or openly discarded. Local authorities face significant capacity and resource constraints, making solid waste management a low priority.

Jennifer Wang brings over a decade of experience in scaling social enterprises across 9 countries, spanning from Southeast Asia to West Africa and culminating in East Africa, with a strong foundation in the water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) sector. In East Africa, she worked across the waste management value chain—covering collection, resource recovery, sorting, and composting—while partnering with brands to reduce waste through operational and packaging redesign, and leading consumer behavioral change initiatives to encourage waste separation at source. Building on this, Jennifer has expanded her focus to trade dynamics and circular economy initiatives, delivering empirical research and supporting the implementation of projects that promote transparency, sustainability, and inclusive growth.

Richard Y. Wang has over 15 years of international experience holding senior roles at global companies, including Fortune 500 firm Baker Hughes and Hydranautics (Nitto Group). He led operations, market development, and strategic initiatives—overseeing integration, divestiture, and expansion programs that drove growth across key markets in the energy, carbon capture, and water management sectors. Richard has since shifted his focus toward sustainability, waste management, and circular economy initiatives, with a strong interest in leveraging data to deliver practical, impactful solutions.
